How to apply to Summer School

The information below refers to all Summer School programs. Specific programs may have additional requirements such as prerequisite knowledge or bringing a laptop for practical sessions. Our staff will be glad to assist you with doubts about the general information below and about individual course requirements.

Entry Requirements

The Barcelona GSE Summer School courses are taught at a high academic standard. A strong background in Economics or related fields is a must. Holding a postgraduate degree, or currently studying in a Master's or PhD program, and/or having related professional experience, are key factors that make an application successful.

As part of your online application, you will be required to upload the following documents:

  • Up-to-date CV
  • Proof or reference for each course fee discount that you are entitled to (if applicable)

Courses are taught entirely in English. While no language certificate is required at the moment of application, participants are expected to have enough command of the language to follow and benefit from the course without causing disruption to the development of the class.

Application Process

Online application form

The application process is conducted online and takes just a few moments to complete:

  1. Access the application system and create a new Summer School application
  2. Complete the information in all of the sections of the application form, paying special attention to the schedule compatibility of the courses selected
  3. Upload the required documents:
    • Up-to-date CV
    • Proof or reference for reduced fees, individual or group discounts that you are entitled to (if applicable)
  4. Press the "submit" button on the final page.

You will be able to track your application status through the system once you have submitted your complete application. You can contact the Summer School Admissions team for assistance at any time throughout the process.

Acceptance and confirmation

Admission decisions are sent to applicants on a rolling basis.

If your application is accepted, you can confirm your place by paying the course fees. This is done through the section in the apply system titled ‘Application Status & Payment’.

Your place in the course will only be guaranteed once we have received the full payment of the course fees. Upon receipt of your payment, you will receive confirmation of your place on the course from our admissions staff via email. See the next section for payment instructions and available discounts.

Please be aware that course places are limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis until the maximum class capacity is reached. We strongly encourage you to confirm your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Applicants will be notified when a course is closing due to maximum attendance, and will be given instructions on how to proceed in order to secure their place. Please see our Summer School policies for more information.

Fees, Discounts, and Payments

Regular and reduced course fees

Fees vary by program. Please check the summer school program pages for the individual course fees. Course fees include all the materials required for the course as well as, refreshments provided at a coffee break each day, and a farewell dinner on each Thursday.

A reduced fee is available to all PhD or Master's students, including Barcelona GSE students and alumni. Reduced fees vary by summer school program.

Proof of your student status is required in order to be granted this reduced fee. Examples of proof include: the certificate of enrollment to your course program, a reference letter from your thesis supervisor, or a copy of your student card (your name, name of the institution and student status must be clearly shown).

Discounts are available for individuals and also for groups. If you are eligible for a discount or a combination of discounts, it is important that your application reflects this. If you would like to receive a personal quotation on the discounts you are entitled to, please email our Summer School admissions team.

Discount rates are the same for all summer school programs. The following discounts are available:

Group discounts

A 10% discount is given when a single employer provides at least 5 representatives to participate in the Summer School. The discount is given to each participant in the group regardless of the courses they have selected. This discount only applies when there is a single payer for the entire invoice.

IMPORTANT: One person must contact the admissions office on behalf of the entire group and provide a comprehensive list of names. All members of the group will be processed and offered the discount at the same time: no discounts will be offered until at least the first 5 people have applied. Additional members can be added on afterwards, if the admissions office is duly notified before they are accepted.

In the event a group of individuals wants to join this offer in their personal capacity (without a sponsor) one of them must take the lead of the group as the main contact with the admissions office, and a unique payment for the whole group fees will be required.

Our admissions staff will be happy to assist you with calculating the discount for any group that wishes to apply. Email us to get started.

Payment by a third party

If your course fees will be paid by a third party, such as a sponsor or your company, please provide all details for invoicing right after you have been accepted. Please include the contact details of the person who is in charge of invoicing within the organization so that we can process your payment without unnecessary delays.

Changes and cancellations

Please review the Barcelona GSE Summer School Policy information [pdf] paying special attention to the cancellation and course change policies. If you wish to cancel or change the course that you applied for, you may be charged an additional fee.

Credit Transfers (ECTS) and Certificate of Attendance

Credit Transfers (ECTS)

Starting in the 2020 edition, the Barcelona GSE Summer School will offer participants the possibility of being assessed for the purpose of requesting official credit transfers (ECTS). There is an administrative fee for this (25€ for every 1.5 credits). Participants who wish to join the Summer School under this scheme will be asked to make an online request and pay the administrative fees during the standard admissions process.

Consult the Credit Transfer page for more information about this option.

Certificate of attendance

Participants not interested in credit transfer will instead receive a Certificate of Attendance, stating the courses and number of hours completed. These students will be neither evaluated nor graded. There is no fee for the certificate.

Venue and Accommodation

The Barcelona GSE Summer School courses take place at the Barcelona GSE Ciutadella Campus within Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). The campus is close to the center of Barcelona and is within walking distance of both the beach and the city's financial, cultural, and governmental centers. See map for more detail.

Participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodations.

You can take advantage of discounted offers by booking accommodation with one of our housing partners. These partners will be able to provide various affordable accommodation options tailored to suit different needs, including apartments, hostels, hotels, shared apartments and student halls.

To qualify for discounts, you may requested to identify yourself as a Barcelona GSE student or participant, and may be asked to provide proof of enrollment.
