Calvó Prize winner Raj Chetty - The Value-Added of Neighborhoods: Neighborhood Effects in Social Mobility

2014 Calvó-Armengol Prize Lecture Highlights

Professor Raj Chetty (Harvard University) delivered the Calvó Prize Lecture on May 21 at La Pedrera. In the lecture, he took the audience through the methodology and results of his work on neighborhoods and their impact on social mobility.

"The main lesson from this work is that intergenerational mobility is shaped by environment, and may therefore be manipulable by policy," Prof. Chetty explained.

International Trade: Firm-Level Perspectives - Elhanan Helpman - Barcelona GSE Lecture (Highlights)

The 27th Barcelona GSE Lecture was delivered at Banc Sabadell Auditorium on May 2, 2013 by Prof. Elhanan Helpman (Harvard University and CIFAR). Professor Helpman explained that tradition approaches to research in international trade emphasized intersectoral trade flows. However, as new firm-level data became available, the possibility of new micro-level insights has emerged. The rapid changes in the world economy have set an equally fast pace for scholars working on this topic.

Jacques Drèze - Fiscal Integration and Growth Stimulation in Europe - Barcelona GSE Lecture (Highlights)

Jacques Drèze, Professor at CORE (Université Catholique de Louvain) and member of the Barcelona GSE Scientific Council, presented the 26th Barcelona GSE Lecture at Banc Sabadell Auditorium on March 19, 2013.

In his lecture, "Fiscal Integration and Growth Stimulation in Europe," Prof. Drèze detailed three proposals aimed at completing the economic integration of the European Monetary Union (EMU), which he believes is necessary in order to guarantee the viability of the monetary union.

European Monetary Union, the euro, and the financial crisis - Joaquín Almunia (European Commission)

The Barcelona GSE officially inaugurated the 2012-13 academic year on Monday, October 22 with a ceremony at Agbar Tower, headquarters of Barcelona GSE board member institution, Agbar Group. The ceremony included a lecture by Joaquín Almunia, Vice President of the European Commission and honorary president of the Barcelona GSE, who spoke on the topic of “The European Monetary Union, the euro and the financial crisis.”

Exits from the Crisis: Labor Reform and Beyond

On March 23, 2012 the Institute for Economic Analysis (IAE) organized a round table debate with five renowned economists–including three Nobel laureates in Economics–on the subject of "Exits from the crisis: labor reform and beyond." "Imperfections in the Economics of Public Policy, Imperfections in Markets, and Policy for Climate Change" - Nicholas Stern (London School of Economics)

In the presidential address to the European Economic Association during the 2009 edition of the EEA-ESEM Congress (hosted by the Barcelona GSE), Prof. Nicholas Stern discussed the mistakes and achievements in economics since the end of World War II. He argued that economists have not played a sufficient role in challenging the economic policies for the last 50 years while noting that new developments in economic theory have given us a better understanding of the roots of human action. Prof. Stern explained the necessary steps that must be taken to avoid climate change and stressed the importance of changing human patterns of behavior.

On November 17, 2008, students, faculty, researchers, dignitaries and government officials gathered in the Agbar Tower in Barcelona for the opening ceremony of the Barcelona GSE. The event was marked by an inaugural speech by Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), titled "The Economics and Politics of Trade: Inextricably Linked". In it, he detailed the economic underpinning and political realities of international trade, which he describes as “two sides of the same coin”.
