Prof. Duflo is the inaugural winner of the Calvó-Armengol International Prize, established in memory of Prof. Antoni Calvó-Armengol (ICREA-UAB and Barcelona GSE). The Prize is awarded every two years to a top researcher in economics or social sciences younger than 40 years old for his or her contribution to the theory and comprehension of the mechanisms of social interaction.

Roundtable "Economists and the Crisis"- Barcelona Economics Trobada VII

Nearly 100 members of the Barcelona Economics community gathered at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans on Friday, October 16 for the seventh edition of the annual Barcelona Economics Trobada. "Imperfections in the Economics of Public Policy, Imperfections in Markets, and Policy for Climate Change" - Nicholas Stern (London School of Economics)

In the presidential address to the European Economic Association during the 2009 edition of the EEA-ESEM Congress (hosted by the Barcelona GSE), Prof. Nicholas Stern discussed the mistakes and achievements in economics since the end of World War II. He argued that economists have not played a sufficient role in challenging the economic policies for the last 50 years while noting that new developments in economic theory have given us a better understanding of the roots of human action. Prof. Stern explained the necessary steps that must be taken to avoid climate change and stressed the importance of changing human patterns of behavior.

"The Economics and Politics of Trade: Inextricably Linked" - Pascal Lamy, World Trade Organization

On November 17, 2008, students, faculty, researchers, dignitaries and government officials gathered in the Agbar Tower in Barcelona for the opening ceremony of the Barcelona GSE. The event was marked by an inaugural speech by Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), titled "The Economics and Politics of Trade: Inextricably Linked". In it, he detailed the economic underpinning and political realities of international trade, which he describes as “two sides of the same coin”.
